SEIU's Justice for All Program -- Highlights from 2009 Newsletters

On June 2008 SEIU delegates to the convention debated and adopted the Justice For All program as the direction of the union for the next 4 years. The Justice for All platform is a commitment to a society where all workers, not just current Union members, will have living wages, affordable health care, and a voice on the job.

We will continue to build our political power locally by electing pro-worker political leaders and by holding those elected accountable to our working families agenda.

We will redouble our efforts to organize workers in our industries and have set an ambitious goal to unite with thousands of security officers and food service workers.

None of this will be possible if we don't increase member participation at all levels in the work and direction of the union. 2008 was an incredible year with great work from SEIU members to move forward to achieve Justice for All. Here are a few highlights of the year:

Security
officers in Boston and Cambridge united and joined our union gaining a broad community support and winning their first contract.

Tufts students—who formed the “Jumbo Janitors Alliance,” named after the school mascot, Jumbo the Elephant— spoke out and stood with Janitors at Tufts (ABM). The new contract includes more full-time work, better wages, and more affordable health care premiums.

Suffolk University Janitors (ABM) united and won a new contract that includes parity for part-time workers, good raises, and more paid time off.

Food Service workers (ABM) at Suffolk University joined together and won their first contract!

Repair & maintenance workers at MIT won a pilot agreement to reduce outsourcing to maintain jobs.

At EduClean in Springfield, 10 workers won 265 hours of back pay.

Remembering 2008/ Recordando 2008

We Made History in 2008!

¡Hicimos la historia en 2008!

Millions of people stood together to make Barack Obama the 44th president of the United States! With this historic moment in our lifetime, we witnessed the power of people, the power of hope, the power of action on these elections, which have spoken about change to get our failing economy back on track. The goal is an economy where hard work is rewarded with decent living wages; where one can provide for themselves and their families; and one can provide a better future for our country’s children. We know that electing a pro-worker President and pro-worker Congress will not be the end, but just the beginning. We want the opportunity to change; to bring change that works! SEIU and so many other groups and individuals are mobilizing to support what it takes to have a economic recovery plan that works – Not “bailouts,” but building blocks. This is the time for real change. Change that means working people can afford to live decently—Change that works!

 2008 Newsletter:  Remembering 2007

Dear Members/Estimados Miembros/Caros Membros,
What an amazing YEAR!  We made great gains with the contracts we negotiated in 2007 - the Master Contract and Higher Education Contracts (MIT, Lesley, Simmons, etc.) We welcomed the Harvard security officers and the Rhode Island suburban janitors, who through their incredible courage and won justice and respect.  We built stronger ties with our community partners - Harvard students went on a hunger strike in support of security officers.  We helped elect political leaders who stand on issues that are important to working families.  We did so many more things together as you will see in this newsletter.  Let's continue to fight and win for Property Service workers. Let's keep building a stronger union that we can be proud of.  STRONGER TOGETHER!

Rocio Saenz, President
