SEIU's Justice for All Program -- Highlights from 2009 Newsletters
On June 2008 SEIU delegates to the convention debated and adopted the Justice For All program as the direction of the union for the next 4 years. The Justice for All platform is a commitment to a society where all workers, not just current Union members, will have living wages, affordable health care, and a voice on the job.
We will continue to build our political power locally by electing pro-worker political leaders and by holding those elected accountable to our working families agenda.
We will redouble our efforts to organize workers in our industries and have set an ambitious goal to unite with thousands of security officers and food service workers.
None of this will be possible if we don't increase member participation at all levels in the work and direction of the union. 2008 was an incredible year with great work from SEIU members to move forward to achieve Justice for All. Here are a few highlights of the year:
♦ Security officers in Boston and Cambridge united and joined our union gaining a broad community support and winning their first contract.
♦ Tufts students—who formed the “Jumbo Janitors Alliance,” named after the school mascot, Jumbo the Elephant— spoke out and stood with Janitors at Tufts (ABM). The new contract includes more full-time work, better wages, and more affordable health care premiums.
♦ Suffolk University Janitors (ABM) united and won a new contract that includes parity for part-time workers, good raises, and more paid time off.
♦ Food Service workers (ABM) at Suffolk University joined together and won their first contract!
♦ Repair & maintenance workers at MIT won a pilot agreement to reduce outsourcing to maintain jobs.
♦ At EduClean in Springfield, 10 workers won 265 hours of back pay.
