9/11 Vigil

On September 11th, 11 security officers and 20 community allies gathered in downtown Boston to commemorate the lives of fellow security officers in New York who were killed during the attacks on the World Trade Center towers in September 11, 2001. The names of the officers killed during the worst terrorist attack on American soil in the country’s history were read aloud while prayers were offered in their memory.

Officers Betty McGuire and Stephen Rice spoke to the gathering regarding the importance of the work that security officers perform every day and the need to pay respect to all security officers for putting their lives on the line every day. Both Officers Rice and McGuire acknowledged the debt that they owe to the men and women were killed that day who acted as the first line of defense for employees and visitors to those buildings. Additionally, Anthony Zuba of the Massachusetts Interfaith Committee for Worker Justice relayed his experience in losing colleagues at the World Trade Center that day and why that experience inspired him to help bring visibility to the working conditions that security officers face.
